
Cowansburg
Cowansburg is a village in Sewickley Township named after the Cowan family. Edgar was a United States Senator from 1861 to 1867.
Cowansburg became a meeting place for the men who served in the Civil War. Their Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) post was called the Greenawalt Post after Major Greenawalt who was killed May 17th, 1864. He is buried in Mars Hill Cemetery. The GAR met above what was the Marsh Mercantile Store.
The town once had a Post Office, Mercantile Store, Church, School, Community Band, and many homes.
The town now has approximately 30 households and is home to a War Memorial with an artillery cannon.
